The Pensions Regulator (TPR) has launched an interactive tool online to help you as an employer determine your staging date for auto-enrolment. The staging date is the date that your automatic enrolment duties start.

Your staging date will be based on the number of people in your largest PAYE scheme as at 1 April 2012. You’ll need to check your staging date again after 1 April 2012.

Some businesses run more than one PAYE scheme. If this applies to you, you need to enter the details of each scheme into the tool. The staging date for your business will be the one that's earliest.

To use the online tool, you’ll need to know how many people are in your PAYE scheme and your employer PAYE reference – you can find this on your last P35 (Employer Annual Return) or P30BC payslip booklet.
